The original movie released in 1957 is a slow burner with a happy "Hollywood ending".  Both the remake and the original use the same basic plot but the original is simpler, shorter and has much less action.  As a consequence the movies have a very different feel to them.  If you can only watch one of them I suggest the remake. It is one of the few remakes that actually improve on the original.
