Donnie Darko – 11/18/02 – Viewed on the BIG Screen
This very original movie, written and directed by Richard Kelly was well received by critics but did poorly at the box office. In the UK, where I saw it, it was more of a box office success but nothing to write home about. The movie involves a giant mysterious bunny rabbit named Frank who warns Jake Gylenhaal of impending doom through creepy prophetic dream scenes. The movie as a whole is just as strange and surreal as the aforementioned scene but the mystery surrounding the entertaining and hilarious plot keeps you very much on the edge of your seat. The themes and sub themes throughout the movie are pretty cool and I bet a film student somewhere is writing a paper about this movie. Also, the music selection is full of new wave classics like “The Killing Moon” by Echo & the Bunnymen and other greats from Joy Division and Tears for Fears. This is a cult classic and probably set Jake well on his way to becoming one of the most sought after actors in Hollywood. But its not for everyone. Just ask my parents.
