Brokeback Mountain – 12/11/05 – Viewed on the BIG Screen
Right now Jake Gylenhaal is my favorite actor. So when I heard he was in an Ang Lee directed indie film I was excited. Then I found out what the premise was and thought it could be a little too much but I was still very eager to see it. I ended up going on opening day only to find out I was going to have to venture outside my neighborhood if I was going to be able to get a ticket anytime in this century. The Chelsea Cinemas in NYC had it showing every hour all day and it was sold out for the whole weekend (not surprising I guess)! I did eventually see it on the East side and absolutely loved it. This is a slow, long movie with an uncomfortable subject matter but I got so into it, that by the end I had forgotten I had been there for 3 hrs and was not uncomfortable with the subject at all. In fact, it evoked so much emotion that I didnt want it to end. This movie is a fantastic love story if you are willing to get past the uncomfortable subject matter. The performances are memorable and the cinematography beautiful. Where this movie lacks in tempo it gains by being well-paced and the music is simple but effective.
